KOCHI: A 40-year-old elephant died of cardiac arrest in Kumbalam on Tuesday.  The elephant, Meenkulam Achuthan, was sick and was undergoing medical treatment for the last few months. Achuthan was an elephant owned by the Olayambadi Sree Krishna Temple in Payannur. It was bought to Kumbalam on a six-month contract contract by Mahesh, Devikripa, Kumbalam. The elephant was mainly used for the exhibitions. “Since Achuthan was small in size, it was used only for ‘Aana Chamayal pradarshanam’. The elephant was brought to Kumbalam in November and was sick for three months. It was treated by veterinarian Gireesh. Achuthan was taken to a nearby temple on Monday morning and had returned by evening. It was eating leaves and was playful. It was to be taken back to Kannur on Tuesday evening. But it went down on his legs. We called the veterinarian who gave him glucose. The elephant died by 12.05 am. The doctor had issued a death certificate in which the reason for death was cited as cardiac ar res t , ” sai d Radakrishnan, father of Mahesh. The postmortem was conducted and the elephant will be buried in Kumbalam on Tuesday night.
