New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday observed that it does not want Delhi to become a model for the entire country.
A bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta regretted how bad is the problem of pollution in the national capital, and remarked this is absolutely not something to be emulated across the country.
"If Delhi is a model, there will be terrible pollution in the whole of the country and we don't want that," said Justice Lokur.
The bench was hearing a PIL relating to solid waste man-management plan across the states when senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, who is assisting the Court as an amicus curiae, said that Delhi should set an example and become a model for the rest of the country.
At this, Justice Lokur retorted: "I hope not..absolutely not." The judge then ruled the worsening pollution in the national capital and said it is better if Delhi is not a model for other cities.
Incidentally, it is the same bench which has been hearing another PIL pertaining to pollution in Delhi and has issued a slew of measures to contain it.
The latest direction from this bench had come in December when it prohibited the use of pet coke and furnace oil in Delhi-NCR and directed the Central government to come up with a formal notification to ban these fuel, which has a very bad effect on air quality.
