New Delhi: Delhi Police registered a total of 362 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in 2017, 25.26% higher than 2016.
In 2016, 289 cases were filed under the NDPS Act, according data released by Delhi police.
It’s not just the increase in the registration of cases, but also arrests and recoveries made that 2017 proved to be a successful year for the department.
According to the report, released by the organisation on its annual press meet, 491 people have been arrested under NDPS Act while only 370 people were arrested in 2016.
Majority of these cases and arrests were made by the Special Cell of Delhi Police which also deals with the terror activities in the capital. When asked the reason behind this spike, Special CP, Special Cell, MM Oberoi attributed it to the sustained efforts of the department.
“Trafficking of drugs was one of our main focuses. We perceive it as narco-terrorism. It is part of terrorism and it was a team effort which resulted in these arrests,” another officer said.
In 2017, the department made an effort to connect all backward and forward links to unearth the entire chain of supply, transit route, mode of trafficking, end users and source of origin of drugs.
In terms of recovery, heroin was 108.97% higher than what it was in 2016. In 2017, 51.581 kg of heroin were recovered as compared to 24.683 kg in 2016. Similarly, party drug meow meow recovered was 81.42% higher than the recovery made in 2016.
Special cell recovered 25.852kg of meow meow while it was just 14.25kg in 2016.
