New Delhi: The National Green Tribunal has directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee to check whether DMRC has rectified the lapses in functioning of its concrete mixing plant in a Janakpuri colony.
A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar passed the order after residents of the colony submitted that the unit had not taken any substantial steps to reduce the sound and air pollution it is causing, despite directions of the tribunal.
The residents also submitted that an inspection had been conducted by the DPCC which had issued a show cause notice to the unit, despite which the plant continues to pollute the environs of the area. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) disputed the claims of the residents, saying it has made necessary amends, including covering of its conveyor belts and installing seven-feet-high sound barriers around the unit.
After considering the residents and DMRC's submissions, the NGT directed DPPC to inspect the unit and pass an order within three days from January 29 in furtherance of the show cause notice issued by the authority and also place the same before the bench on the next date of hearing, February 3.
The tribunal said DPCC's order will properly deal with DMRC's claim that it has taken steps to remedy the exceeding standards of emissions as well as has put up all anti pollution devices. DPCC has also been directed to inform NGT about the working duration of the unit.
Meanwhile, DMRC has been asked to tell the NGT about the number of trucks that move to and fro from the unit each day. The tribunal was hearing a plea by the Residents Welfare Association of A-1 Block of Janakpuri who have sought closure of the unit located right opposite a school. The DMRC on the last date had assured the bench that it would make necessary amends and that within two months it will shift the unit out of the colony to some other location. NGT had given DMRC one week to rectify the lapses.
