New Delhi: The family of Manoj Vashishth on Monday morning met Home Minister Rajnath Singh regarding his alleged encounter by the Delhi Police. Singh assured them a fair trial and said an SIT has been set up to probe the incident.

"We met the Home Minister, he was very helpful and told us that the SIT has been formed and postmortem was recorded. There has been no injustice towards us and we are convinced by what he said. He also assured us that he will be willing to help us in the future," the family said.

Manoj was gunned down in an encounter by Delhi Police at a restaurant in central Delhi, his family had accused the police of killing him in cold blood and demanded a judicial enquiry.

Manoj Vashishth's wife Priyanka and brother Anil accused the police of staging a fake encounter claiming that Manoj was not a hardened criminal but was facing cases of fraud.

According to police officials, when they went to arrest the suspect at the restaurant he opened fire following which the police retaliated, leading to the suspect's death. Police sources claimed that there are over a 100 cases of cheating against Manoj. He and his family members were also arrested in a cheating case in 2002, the sources said.

Both Manoj and his wife Priyanka have political background. While Priyanka is an elected member of municipal body in Baghpat, Manoj was a member of Samajwadi Party and had even uploaded pictures with senior leaders of the party on social media.

Manoj, a native of Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, was staying along with his wife in South Patel Nagar.
