Defending Olympic women's marathon champion Mizuki Noguchi of Japan has decided not to take part in the Beijing Games due to injury, public broadcaster NHK said Tuesday.
Noguchi, who took home the gold at Athens four years ago, has been a doubt for the August 17 race after tearing her left thigh in training.
NHK, quoting an unnamed senior official in Japan's Olympics delegation, said Noguchi had decided not to take part because she cannot complete sufficient exercise before the marathon.
