Ahmedabad: There was uproar in Gujarat Assembly on Wednesday over the hooch tragedy in Ahmedabad with the Opposition staging a walkout demanding Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah's resignation over the tragedy.
"We tried to raise the issue in Assembly but we were disallowed. A commission of enquiry should be formed and Home Minister should be sacked," Congress leader Arjun Modhwadia said.
The death toll in the tragedy has mounted to 26 after nine more dead bodies were recovered on Wednesday. The bodies of seven people were found in the Odhav area in Ahmedabad.
The government, bowing to public and political pressure, on Wednesday suspended two police inspectors posted in Majoor Gam.
The Assistance Commissioner of Police of Odhav area has been transferred following the recovery of seven dead bodies in the area.
On Tuesday, just a few kilometres away, 17 persons had died after drinking illicit liquor.
Angry residents of the Gita Mandir locality went on a rampage on Tuesday, pelting stones at the police.
Police resorted to firing teargas shells to control the mob.
Family members have been blaming police for letting the illegal liquor vends flourish.
Gujarat Assembly's Leader of Opposition Shaktishin Gohil, who visited the area was told that by the victims' family members they had complained against illicit liquor dens in their area to the police on many occasions. However the police did not take any action, they alleged.
The first death was reported on Tuesday morning when some people of the Majoor Gam area started vomiting and complained of stomach ache after consuming spurious liquor.
The victims were taken to VS Hospital where first death occurred at around 0900 hrs IST.
