COIMBATORE: Concerned over the attrition rate among faculty members in private dental colleges, who quit midway through an academic calendar seeking greener pastures, the Dental Council of India (DCI) has framed guidelines for their service conditions. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare approved the guidelines last month. As per the guidelines, teachers must serve for a minimum period of one year (12 months) in a dental college for obtaining valid teaching experience. “If they had served for a period less than 12 months, it would not be counted as teaching experience,” a DCI official told ‘Express’ on Tuesday.Dental college managements have been asked to issue the relieving order for only those teachers who complete a minimum 12 months’ service in an institution. In case of any dispute, the faculty member can take up the issue with the management of the college, university concerned or the State Government.Similarly, to curb impersonation of teachers, the DCI has made it clear that the service of faculty members will not be taken into account “if he/she has been shown (as working) in more than one dental college during inspection in one academic year.”“All dental college teachers in the country have to furnish an affidavit along with details such as whether they are working full time and not enrolled in two colleges simultaneously. These affidavits must be countersigned by the principal of the institution concerned,” the official said.“We had framed these guidelines to avoid frequent migration of teaching faculty from one dental college to another in the absence of any specific provisions. Private colleges have complained that when teachers leave midway through an academic year, the class schedule is disrupted. The colleges find it difficult to fill the vacancy immediately,” he added.
