Steps were being taken to employ daily wage workers to check illegal water tapping in the city, Vellore Corporation Mayor P Karthiyayini has said.
Noting that there were around 56,000 water connections in the city as per the records, she said several complaints were being received from the public about the illegal water tapping by the residents.
An eight member committee involving zonal officers, engineers and assistant engineers was formed in August to look into the issue. The committee had conducted a drive for two days in the end of August in around 300 houses in Sathuvachari area and had identified around 50 houses with illegal water connections. Since the Corporation was experiencing severe shortage of staff, plans were on to involve daily wage workers to check illegal water tapping and involve the Corporation staff to supervise them, Karthiyayini said further.
