GUNTUR: The Guntur urban police busted a fake currency racket by taking two persons into their custody two days ago. A huge quantity of fake currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination were seized from the duo. According to police sources, the duo who were taken into custody in connection with the fake currency racket, were identified as MD Imran and SK Ruben of West Bengal. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had already identified Guntur district as one of the major hubs of fake currency rackets in the country. It asked the Guntur rural and urban police to be more vigilant of the activities of fake currency rackets. Following the NIA alert, the Guntur police identified some places which can be safe havens for fake note rackets. About 10 members are said to be involved in circulation of counterfeit currency. According to a senior police officer, the fake currency racket is being operated from a village in Malda of West Bengal. When contacted, urban SP S Syamsundar said they were leaving no stone unturned to nab the fake currency rackets in the district.
