Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday urged the State government officials to recommend to the Central government that Narikuaravas alias Kuruvikkaras (Gypsies) be included in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs).
At present, they are on the Most Backward Classes list.
Their livelihood revolves around hunting, catching birds, collecting honey, which resemble the activities of tribal communities.
Their socio-economic condition and educational status mirror tribal communities, another reason why the CM recommended that gypsies be included in the list of the STs.
“The move will help uplift the socio-economic status of the gypsies,” an official press release here said.
The chief minister also announced that the parental income ceiling for availing the post-matric scholarship by the students belonging to SC/STs and those converted to Christianity from these communities, be hiked from `1 lakh to `2 lakh.
This measure will come into effect from the current financial year and increase the number of students who get scholarship.
The move will cost an additional expenditure of `34.
83 lakh.
