THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Russian Cultural Centre in the city is celebrating the 300th birth anniversary of eminent Russian scientist and poet Mikhail Lomonosov. The celebrations are being organised in association with the Russkiy Mir Foundation, Moscow, Centre administration-in-charge Dr Anil Kumar said in a statement. Contests for college students, seminar series and a photography exhibition will be part of the event.Cultural Affairs Minister K C Joseph will inaugurate the celebrations at the Russian Cultural Centre at 3.45 p.m. on Wednesday.Mikhail Vasiliyevich Lomonosov (November 19, 1711 - April 15, 1765) was a polymath - a person who was able to make significant contributions in diverse fields. A scientist and writer, he is remembered for his outstanding contributions to literature, education and science.Among other things, he is remembered for the discovery of the atmosphere of the planet Venus. As a poet, he is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Russian literary language. The Moscow State University was renamed M V Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1940 in his honour.
