New Delhi: The Opposition Congress has decided to move a no-confidence motion against the Speaker Maheswar Mohanty during the brief session of the Orissa Assembly slated to commence from March 21.
The house was being convened for a brief period to table the vote-on-account as the full-fledged budget could not be placed due to the panchayat elections.
"We have already given notice to the assembly secretariat about our intention in this regard", as quoted by PTI, Congress Chief Whip Satyabhushan Sahu said.
He said the Congress members who have signed the notice were of the opinion that Mohanty should not preside over the house in view of the cases pending against him concerning several issues.
The issues included the recent controversy over alleged recovery of ruling BJD election material from an assembly vehicle during the Panchayat polls when the vehicle was on way to Puri, the assembly constituency of the Speaker.
"Speaker has to be impartial in whatever he does", Sahu said adding a case had been registered in connection with the incident in which Mohanty had been named.
It was also planned that a delegation of Congress leaders would call on the Governor Rameshwar Thakur on March 19 to apprise him about the matter, party sources said.
The other opposition parties including the CPI, CPI-M, OGP and JMM were also being consulted in this regard, they said.
