BANGALORE: For the residents of Kengal Hanumanthaiah Road in Chikkalasandra in Padmanabhanagar, the day starts with cursing Bruhat Bengalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Though the road is named after Kengal Hanumanthaiah, a former chief minister and a visionary who built the Vidhana Soudha, the road itself is in tatters. The BBMP authorities are not taking any effort to relay the road despite several complaints from the residents in the area.Like many roads in the city, this too saw concrete a few years ago. Last year, the BBMP, with a view to lay drain pipes on both sides of the 4th Main Road, dug up the concrete road. The roads remain its damaged self, despite the work being completed long ago. There are big loose stones on the entire stretch of the road making it difficult to walk, let alone drive. Several instances where children have fallen into the uncovered storm water drain and injuring themselves led to residents complaining repeatedly. A resident on the road, D Dhruva Rao, said that BBMP authorities are in “deep slumber” and that they are not responsive to their complaints. Around three months back, heaps of broken stones were dumped on the road. But, work is yet to start. Blame gameThe area councillor and BBMP engineers are blaming each other for the delay. The engineer say that Rs 1.25 crore proposal, sent to the finance department of BBMP, is likely to be approved in a next couple of days after which work will begin. But, according to him, the councilor wants to start the work without waiting for the department’s consent. “How is it possible to award the work to any contractor without the proposal being approved? What if some thing goes wrong? Will the elected representatives come to our rescue,” questions an official. Caught between the two parties are the citizens, who navigate this road. The BBMP engineer however says that it will take another three months for the work to complete. Till then swalpa adjust madkolli, he says.
