CHENNAI: After having made credit points from Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes mandatory for post graduate students, Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University Mayilvahanan Natarajan has said that it may become mandatory for doctors to attend these programmes periodically.Speaking on the sidelines of the Silver Jubilee Cardiac workshop organised at the Madras Medical Mission, Dr Mayilvahanan Natarajan said that practising doctors definitely needed to keep attending conferences and workshops to keep themselves “updated in their fields of practice”.The practice of ensuring that doctors and surgeons attend CME programmes mandatorily before renewing their license to practise medicine, has been in place in the US and other countries for a while now, he also said. “The medical degree that we give doctors is a certification that they have studied and gained the necessary knowledge.”The state’s premier varsity introduced the mandatory CME credits programme from the academic year 2010-11 and has been following the same for PG, PG diploma and CRR interns till date.“When we lay so much stress on students and PG’s attending conventions when they are in an academic setting, there has to be some mechanism to ensure even practising doctors attend such programmes,” he added. He also indicated that this regulation might be brought in place through the actions of the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the government. When asked what sort of time frame is necessary for such a rule to be effected, he hinted that it could be done in the next two years.Dr Natarajan also appreciated the MMM faculty and hospital for the high quality of medical care and education they have been providing. The two-day workshop will feature several live surgeries by national and international cardiac surgeons.
