CHENNAI: Describing as evasive and useless the remarks made by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the demand for supporting the US-backed resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday night charged that DMK president M Karunanidhi had enacted yet another drama in the Lankan Tamils issue by calling off his March 22 hunger strike. The Prime Minister had said that he did not have the final text of the US-backed resolution and that India was inclined to vote in favour of the resolution. However, the PM had said nothing about the human rights violations in Sri Lanka and failed to say that the Lankan government would be condemned for the same. “It was just an evasive, useless reply of the PM”, she observed. “When Karunanidhi enacted a drama in the disguise of staging a fast for the cause of the Lankan Tamils in 2009, P Chidambaram played a role in that drama and helped Karunanidhi in ending that ‘fast for a while’. Now, the Prime Minister too had played a similar role and helped Karunanidhi in ending his deceitful drama. The PM’s ambiguous reply is indeed regrettable”, Jayalalithaa said. She recalled the resolution moved by her and adopted by the TN Assembly on June 8, 2011, asking the Centre to impose economic sanctions on Lanka.
