PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N Rangasamy has sought a special grant of Rs 3,654 crore from the Centre to fund infrastructure projects in the Union Territory. The request was made when he called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Tuesday.Presenting a memorandum he urged the Prime Minister to consider sanction of special assistance over and above the plan allocation to finance the infrastructure related projects so that the Union Territory government could generate more revenue and ease traffic congestion to cope up with rise in tourist inflow.He sought `1,500 crore for gas-based power plant in Yanam, `400 crore for infrastructure facilities in Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, `100 crore for Superspecialty Hospital in Karaikal, `240 crore for three railway overbridges at Arumbarthapuram, 100-feet road and AFT Mill Road and flyovers at Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi squares, `525 crore for new railway line between Chennai and Cuddalore via Mahabalipuram and Puducherry, `280 crore for underground drainage at Puducherry, Karaikal underground drainage and Mahe fishing harbour, `100 crore for New Assembly building, `50 crore for Kamaraj Manimandapam cum convention centre, `50 crore for Uppanar Road Overbridge, Coastal protection works `150 crore, Karaikal Western bypass `75 crore.In the tourism sector, which is planned to drive the engine of growth, the Chief Minister has sought `100 crore for creating infrastructure and amenities and developing heritage prescient in Puducherry, `75 crore for infrastructure facilities at special tourism zone at Manapet, destination development of Karaikal and creating pilgrim circuit in Puducherry and Karaikal connecting historically important temples and churches.Rangasamy said that though the UT’s budget happens to be `4,000 crore plus, about one–eight of it goes towards debt servicing. Due to this, it has becomes difficult for the State to make both ends meet and accordingly many of the infrastructure related projects could not be taken up, he added.
