TIRUCHY: A horticultural college and research centre for women, a first of its kind facility in the region, was inaugurated in Srirangam. Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa unveiled the college by video conferencing at the Secretariat in Chennai. The college will be run by the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University.“I am immensely pleased to inaugurate the only horticulture college and research centre for women in my Srirangam constituency,” Ms Jayalalithaa said. She asked students to use the facilities being offered and help in the development of horticulture in the region and the State.District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan, who presided over the programme in Tiruchy, said the district prided itself on its horticulture products like banana and beetle leaves. A horticulture college exclusively for women would ensure that the Srirangam constituency would develop further, she added. She believed that the college and the research centre would play a key role in the second green revolution.“I wanted to do my under graduation in horticulture but the college was only in Periyakulam. So, my parents asked me to do some other course. But the chief minister, by setting up one such college for women, has given me an opportunity to pursue the course which I longed for,” said G Kavi Nilavu, a student from Arumbavur in Perambalur.“You have helped us achieve our dreams and that of our parents. We will feel secure in the college, which is very near our village,” Kavi Nilavu said.Thirty-three of the 40 seats in the college have been taken so far.Dharmapuri, Tiruvarur Dists Get New CollegeChief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday inaugurated two arts and science colleges in remote areas of Dharmapuri and Tiruvarur districts through video-conferencing from Chennai.The new government colleges were set up at Pappireddipatti in Dharmapuri district and Nannilam in Tiruvarur district.The CM, who interacted with Dharmapuri Collector R Lilly, advised students who secured admission to the college to utilise the facility to the level best. The college was temporarily functioning from the Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School building in Pappireddipatti.Thanking the Chief Minister, Mahalakshmi, who joined B A (English) course in the college, said because of the efforts taken by Jayalalithaa the students do not have to travel far for their studies.Echoing her view, Vidya, a student at the college at Nannilam said she had scored 963 marks in Class XII examination but could not afford to travel to distant places for pursuing higher studies. But now, with the opening of the college, she can pursue her dreams. Besides the Collector, Periyar University Vice-Chancellor Dr Muthuchezian, Registrar Sethu Gunasekaran and Harur RDO V R Subbulakshmi were present at the venue in Pappireddipatti.
