Classes on Terrace Farming

Aimed at promoting organic farming and self-reliance in vegetable cultivation, Samanwaya Youth Consortium organised a class on vegetable farming on terraces at Chalikkavattom on Sunday.  This was the 25th programme conducted by Samanwaya, a consortium of young men  Ponnurunni - Chalikkavattom.

Seedlings and booklets containing guidelines on farming were distributed to those who attended the class. Sharing his experiences Parameswaran, who has been growing vegetables on his terrace for the last 25 years, said that organic farming saved upto 40 percent of water used in conventional  farming.

“No pesticides are used for organic farming and the crops taste better,” he said. 

Horticulture expert from Krishi Vigyan Kendra Shoji Joy Edison, who led class on vegetable farming, emphasised on the practical knowledge on how to become self-reliant in meeting the  requirement for vegetables through terrace farming and different methods to make it a success.
