New Delhi: Chief Justice of India TS Thakur on Saturday expressed his concern over increasing vacancies at various courts and urged the government to intervene.
“500 judges posts are vacant in the High Courts. They should be working today, but they are not. Presently, there are several vacant court rooms in India, but no judges available. A large number of proposals are still pending and hope the government will intervene to end this crisis," he said.
“Several tribunals are without judges and I am pained to send my retired colleagues there. Tribunals are not equipped and no retired SC judge wants to head tribunal," he said.

Meanwhile, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “We have highest regard for CJI but we respectfully disagree with him. This year we have made 120 judges appointment (second highest appointments up to 2013)."
“Since 1990, there have been only 80 appointments. 5,000 vacancies are in lower judiciary in which the government has no role to play," he added.
In April, Thakur - while addressing a joint conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices - broke down urging the government to fill up vacancies in the High Court.
