City gets a spanking new fitness centre

Now, sweat it out with the help of the Kerala University. A spanking new fitness centre at the Kerala University Stadium was thrown open to the public on Monday.

The fitness centre has advanced training equipment, including weight-training machines. The centre will be open to the public as well as university students for a fee, university officials said.

For members of the public, the annual fee is ` 1,000, and for university students, ` 750. University students can also become members by paying a monthly fee of ` 125. The fitness centre will be open from 5 am to 8.30 am and from 4 pm to 8 pm. Women can use the facility from 8.45 am to 12 noon.

The USP of the fitness centre is that facilities at the University Stadium also will be available to the members, especially to those who prefer a quiet stroll in the mornings or evenings. They include the synthetic track, football ground and net practice facility for cricket and basketball. School and college students will also be provided free training in athletics, football, hockey, handball, boxing, kho-kho and kabaddi.

Inaugurating the fitness centre, Sports Minister K B Ganesh Kumar said that his department aimed to realise the dream of ‘community sports’, where sports facilities are available to all. Though many people are interested in jogging or taking a morning walk, they are prevented from engaging in the activities due to lack of facilities.

University Syndicate members, Sports Council president Padmini Thomas, sports additional director Najeemudeen and physical education director Dr Eugene Sunil were among those present.
