My friend, choose your materialistic goals wisely and take care to keep them down to a reasonable number, preferably a single digit.

Now begin your second list. In this list, put down the priceless inner values that you feel are crucially necessary for your growth.

These values can be anything that transforms you and expands your personality like love, compassion, care, sharing, honesty, sincerity, peace, equipoise, stability, patience, tolerance, perseverance, gratitude, enthusiasm, selflessness, forgiveness, inspiration, motivation, courage, sensitivity, humility, modesty, acceptance, courtesy, respect, reverence, thoughtfulness, cheerfulness, discrimination, detachment etc. If you want to remove any of the shortcomings that are  impeding your progress and affecting you negatively in your daily life, choose a core value which will automatically neutralise it.

For example, if you are too impatient most of the time, counter it by choosing to cultivate the quality of  patience.

Again, keep the inner values you put down on your list to a reasonable number like five or seven so that you can focus on them with  intensity and awareness every day.

After you have successfully cultivated these, you can always replace them with new values to focus upon during meditation.

Having listed your core values in this way, pick them up one by one for a little detailing using these guidelines.

How would you define this value or quality for yourself?

How will it transform your life?

What are the ways in which you will cultivate it?

In which areas of your life will you use it?

Which relationships will be benefited by it the most?

What are the factors likely to hinder you?

How will you guard against them?

What are the factors that will help you?

How will you promote them?

Who are the people whom you regard as role models as far as this quality is concerned?

The details should include answers to these 10 questions and others that you feel are relevant to you. Doing this gives you greater clarity and sharper focus about how to cultivate and implement these qualities. Now look at the role models whom you have listed.

Along with the people around you in your day-to-day life, they should also include inspiring  personalities like great achievers and enlightened beings.

For example, if one of the qualities on your list is charity, or service you could include Mother Teresa.

For great inner growth and discrimination, you can choose Swami  Vivekananda among your role models.
