Mumbai: A senior Narcotics Control Bureau official from Chandigarh arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon for investigations into the case of IPS officer Saji Mohan, who was arrested with a large consignment of heroin last Sunday, a police official said. Balwinder Singh is the superintendent of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Chandigarh where Mohan was posted as a zonal director two years ago, the official said.
So far, the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has seized a little over 39 kg heroin - worth more than Rs.390 million in the international market - from Mohan, an IPS officer belonging to the Jammu and Kashmir cadre.
While 12 kg was seized last Sunday, 25 kg more of high-grade heroin was recovered from his flat in Naigaon suburb of Thane, adjoining Mumbai on Tuesday.
“The ATS suspects the involvement of some officials, including lower levels, into the racket. We are trying to verify the statements given by Mohan during interrogation,” ATS Additional Commissioner Parambir Singh told mediapersons on Tuesday evening.
Balwinder Singh is expected to throw light on the number of seizures made during Mohan’s tenure in Chandigarh, the manner in which the seizures were recorded and accounted for, and whether any quantities were missing.
The police official said that during interrogation, Mohan - sent by court to police custody till Jan 31 - has revealed a nexus with some narco-dealers in Jammu and Kashmir, with links across the border, pointing to Pakistan.
The police stumbled upon Mohan when they arrested two drug dealers, former Haryana policeman Rajesh Kumar and his associate Vickey, who were nabbed from Oshiwara, a posh suburb in north-west Mumbai.
During interrogation, the duo revealed Mohan’s involvement after which the ATS laid a trap and nabbed him last Sunday.
