Inmates of Cherlapally prison will soon have a giant pyramid-like structure within which they can sit and contemplate their navel. It’s called meditation. The Prison Department thinks that jailbirds, bereft of freedom, might like to meditate upon their condition.
The decision to set up a meditation pyramid was taken following an incident where a prisoner grievously attacked six fellow inmates at the prison on July 4.
At present there are about 2,100 prisoners lodged at the Cherlapally prison. Of them, 62 suffer from psychological problems, 400 from health issues and 150 from life-threatening diseases such as AIDS and heart problems.
The department has tied up with the Hyderabad-based Pyramid Spiritual Trust to construct the giant pyramid. “We decided to construct a 30 sq ft pyramid to serve as a permanent meditation centre,” director general of prisons TP Das told Express. The estimated cost of the pyramid construction is about Rs 8 lakh, which will be shared by the trust and the department.
