The 29th anniversary of the Humour Club International, Triplicane Chapter, was celebrated on Sunday. Orator Suki Sivam, actor Delhi Ganesh, Prof M Ramachandran, popular debate participant S Raja and poet M Ramalingam were the guests for the function.

The club, which started in 1983 with 13 members at the Hindu High School, today has over 1,500 members. The members are from various walks of life such as the film sector, business and education, among others. ''Even film directors like K Balachander and Visu are members of this club. We meet on the second Sunday of every month at the PS High School in Mylapore. Apart from cracking jokes and laughing, we have also taken initiatives to educate children from economically weak families. We raise funds for these activities," said a representative of the club. ''It is a club to entertain people through qualitative humour," he added.

The function was inaugurated by the chairman of the club, K S Seetharaman. In his speech, Prof M Ramachandran, with a dose of wit, spoke about marriages and political parties.

Suki Sivam said, ''I said to a friend that if one laughs hard, even a bothering disease is bound to go away. My friend immediately replied that it was indeed true, because when he once laughed out loud and hard, his wife didn't come back!"

Poet Ramalingam's joke-packed speech was matched by Raja's quick talk and raised by Delhi Ganesh's recounting of his film experiences. Fifteen members from the club received prizes through a lucky draw.
