Car Free Day to be held in Delhi on October 22 from 7 am to 12 noon
Transport Minister Gopal Rai said the government proposes a cycle rally on that day in the morning on the car-free stretch.

New Delhi: Delhi government on Thursday said that 'Car Free Day', an initiative to encourage people to use public transport in the national capital will be observed on October 22 from 7 AM to 12 noon on the stretch falling between the Red Fort and India Gate.

Transport Minister Gopal Rai said the government proposes a cycle rally on that day in the morning on the car-free stretch. Rai on Thursday held a meeting with officials from transport department, DTC, DIMTS, Delhi Traffic Police, Delhi Police, DMRC, DPCC, PWD, MCD, NDMC, ASI, ITDP and representatives of EMBARQ.

"Government will ensure that no car is allowed to ply between the strech falling between the Red Fort and India Gate on October 22. We will deploy 20 DTC buses as shuttle service between Red Fort and India Gate to facilitate people," Rai told reporters.

He said that government will also appeal to drivers of e-rickshaws to run their vehicles on this stretch so that people don't have to face problem. In order to involve every section of the society in 'Car Free Day' event, all legislators and representatives from various business groups, among others would be invited to participate in a meeting on October 9.
