CHENNAI: Calling for free and fair conduct of the local body elections in the State, DMDK chief Vijayakanth warned that unless the election commission was strict in their actions, the ghosts of the 2006 civic polls would return to haunt them.“Everyone is aware of the autocratic manner in which the then DMK government conducted the previous local body elections. Even the Madras High Court ruled in favour of a re-election. This situation must not arise again,” he said.People are expecting the polls to be conducted in a fair manner and this can only be accomplished if the State Election Commission, the police and the election workers work together.Noting that many major parties have opted to go it alone in these polls, he observed that those in power are exerting their power to be re-elected at any cost. “Some of our party cadre have been threatened and booth slips with party symbols have been issued in a number of areas,” he said. Vijayakanth also said the CD of electoral rolls released to other parties and to the ruling party, differed by about 400 persons in favour of the latter. “If this is the case in one ward, imagine how many votes can be influenced in all wards across the State,” he said.
