Dehradun: A total of 594 cadets were on Saturday commissioned as officers in the Army following an impressive passing-out parade at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun.

Sixteen foreign cadets belonging to the nations like Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius and Kyrgyzstan also passed out of the Army's premier institute.

The cadets marched in file as Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi reviewed the parade and inspected the guard of honour at the drill square in front of Chetwode building while Army helicopters showered petals from the sky.

Speaking on the occasion, Tyagi said that it was a proud moment for the Indian Army to have such young and energetic officers within its ranks.

"The academy has steeled you in providing a sound foundation on which you have to build your professional and leadership skills and excel in the profession you have chosen for yourself," he said.

At the traditional "Piping-in" ceremony, the cadets tossed their caps in the air and hugged each other to celebrate their becoming part of the Indian Army.

Ashish Singh Mehta was awarded the Sword of Honour and gold medal for best all-round performance by a gentleman cadet.

The silver and bronze medals were presented to cadets Satyadeep Dhanda and Bhavani Singh respectively.
