New Delhi: Is getting out from under the quilt the hardest thing you have had to do this season? You are not alone in your misery.

That early morning shower that nearly gave you a heart attack before leaving for work or coffee that cooled before it was off the stove - regardless of the city, the bitter grumblings have begun.

As the mercury dips to unusual lows in cities that rarely experience a harsh winter, people reserve bragging rights on Facebook and Twitter on how cold their city actually is.

"Mumbai was brrrrrrrrrr cold this morning at 6. I froze while doing yoga with Shiv, my yoga teacher," filmmaker and columnist Pritish Nandy said on Twitter.

On Tuesday (0830 IST) the minimum temperature at Mumbai touched 15.1 degrees Celsius. Day time temperature remained at 26.9 degrees Celsius, according to the Indian Meteorological Department.

According to reports, the lowest temperature in 2009 was recorded on December 31 at 13.4 degree Celsius at Santacruz.

In the battle for the coldest winter destinations, smaller cities stole the march over metros with minimum temperature falling to single digits in Chandigarh (Maximum - 21.8 Minimum - 5.7), Patna (24.2, 9.6), Dharamsala (16.8, 4.3), Udaipur (23.8, 7.4), Jammu (19.5, 8.7), Lucknow (23.5, 8.3), Shillong (15.1, 5.8) and Hissar (25.0, 4.6).

"With winter getting surprisingly cold in mumbai, the entire mumbai vs delhi argument gets a different spin," tweeted ankitspoddar.

The minimum temperature was around 7 degrees Celsius in Delhi, a notch below average, while the maximum temperature will be around 22 degrees. It was a sunny day for Delhi Tuesday, but cold winds were expected to bring the mercury down, weather officials said.

With Parliament ending its least productive winter session, the heat is on the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance battling Opposition demands of a Joint Parliamentary Probe on the multi-crore 2G mobile phone spectrum scam.

"Delhi in winter can be a treat, but not if you a are a poor, hapless migrant -- and not for reasons espoused by P Chidambram (since denied)," cricketwallah tweeted.

Delhiites, better adjusted to sharp winters, love the early morning sun and endless opportunities to picnic on the grounds of its many heritage sites.

But Mumbaikars love the chance to finally air the labels they picked up abroad.

In Bangalore (28.0, 19.0), the IT capital of India, morning commuters fished out their woolens as an early chill triggered by a low-pressure build-up off the Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coasts brought temperatures down early December.

Kolkata, with its history of temperate weather, was relatively cool at 17.1 degrees Celsius. The winter chill is yet to hit coastal areas and Cuddalore (31.1, 23.6) and Vishakhapatnam (29.0, 22.8) are basking in the sun.

If you are planning to pack your bags and head for the North-East, Agartala (25.5, 12.9) and Tezpur (24.7, 12.8) are lovely mid December.

But if you have relatives in Ahmedabad, now is the time for a quick visit to them as the temperature remains a tolerable 10.5 degrees.

How cold is your city? Are you complaining about it constantly to friends and colleagues or cheering the nip in the air?

What's your reaction?
