New Delhi: Following a bomb threat in the United Nations headquarters security has been beefed up, officials said on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, police had received an anonymous call that a cab with two bags full of explosives will reach the building at 1000 hours IST.
However, police did not consider the threat to be credible as neither the staff was informed nor the area around it was sealed.
The first indication came as several police cars were seen outside the 39-storey glass and steel structure and it was several hours later that reports about the threat started circulating the headquarters.
The landmark UN headquarters was considered a prime target for terrorists in the aftermath of September 11, 2001 attacks and since then the security has been enhanced.
In wake of the plausible security threat, the UN has recently introduced new security passes for the staff also.
