Several vendors in Vellore fruit and flower market hoisted black flags protesting against the central government move allowing 51 per cent FDI in the retail market on Tuesday.
The shop owners of the Thirumuruga Kirubanandha Variyar Salai near the old bus stand unfurled black flags around 11 am. The members of the Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu earlier held a protest at the market and demanded the centre to roll back its decision. The black flag protest in Vellore was part of the state-wide protest of the traders’ federation.
The district secretary of the Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu, RP Gnanavelu, said, “The black flag would not be brought down for the next one week and on October 2, the members would burn copies of the policy.”
The move would affect the retailers throughout the country, he added.
