Dehradun: Taking on an aggressive stand, BJP MLA Ganesh Joshi's daughter Neha Joshi on Friday accused news channels of "sensationalising" the alleged attack on Uttarakhand Police horse Shaktiman. Joshi has been arrested for beating Shaktiman and breaking its left hind leg but according to Neha her father is not the culprit.
"It's a witch-hunt led by some sections of the media and the Congress party in the state. We are not at all worried but confident that the truth will prevail," Neha said.
She said media chose to ignore the apologies of her father, on the behalf of the party, for the attack on the horse.
Coming out in full support of her father, she said his innocence has been proven with multiple videos circulating and showing that he did not hit the horse even once. She added that her father was only trying to scare the horse by hitting the ground with a stick.
She claimed that the BJP leadership has also backed her father and didn't question his credibility.
The BJP MLA was arrested on Friday in Dehradun and charged with attacking the horse whose leg has been amputated.
Animal rights activist Gauri Mulekhi accused Joshi of greviously injuring the animal. "Ganesh Joshi has caused massive inconvenience to the horse, so a little inconvenience for him is only justified. What happens to him is for the law to decide," she said.
This is the second arrest in the case after a BJP worker Pradeep Bora was arrested for the alleged assault on Thursday. Bora was a part of the protest march led by BJP Mussoorie MLA Ganesh Joshi, which was agitating against alleged cases of corruption, when the horse was injured. Bora was arrested from Haldwani.
On Thursday, the leg of Uttarakhand Police horse Shaktiman was amputated. Doctors diagnosed that blood supply to injured leg had stopped so it had to be amputated.
Doctors had anticipated that the horse might die by Friday if the leg is not amputated. "Doctors were of view that horse might lose its life by Friday morning due to the spread of gangrene, so they decided to amputate the leg urgently," the Uttarakhand DGP said.
The incident took place on March 14 during a protest against Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat near the state Assembly in Dehradun. The horse Shaktiman, part of the Uttarakhand Mounted Police, fell down during the protest after Bora allegedly tried to pull it down.
Joshi was seen trying to hit the horse with a stick and was also accused of breaking its leg. He has, however, maintained his innocence claiming he was just trying to scare the animal.
