VELLORE: Police personnel attached to the Blue Brigade and Green Brigade, which were formed three months ago for round-the-clock surveillance in crime prone zones in the district, have thwarted several attempts of chain snatching and other crimes.“The special teams were constituted with the objective of preventing chain-snatching and keeping a check on criminals in the district. The squads have helped bring down the number of incidents of chain snatching from about five cases per week to nil,” Superintendent of Police (SP) of Vellore A Kayalvizhi told Express. The strength of the anti-chain snatching and quick reaction teams, which were started with 20 policemen on January 13, 2012, has been increased to 24. While the Blue Brigade patrols crime prone zones on high speed motorbikes fitted with sirens, public announcement systems and walkie-talkies during the night, the Green Brigade does the rounds during the day. “Since January 13 this year, a total of five cases of chain snatching have been reported in the district, against a total of 44 chain snatching cases reported during the corresponding period last year,” said the SP.Apart from making the district free from chain-snatching, the special teams have also played a vital role in detecting grievous crimes such as kidnapping for ransom and house break-ins. Officers of these brigades have also chased down and caught several robbers and kidnappers in the last three months.Similarly, another member of the Blue Brigade had not only prevented two robbers from trying to break into a house in Paradharami police station limits, but also nabbed them. “We are planning to further increase the strength of the two brigades to 30,” Kayalvizhi added.
