Ahmedabad: Suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt on Wednesday demanded that Nanavati Commission, which is probing the 2002 Gujarat riots, summon Chief Minister Narendra Modi on the basis of allegations made by late Amarsinh Chaudhary, a former Gujarat Chief Minister.
Bhatt sent a letter to the Commission on Wednesday, along with a copy of Chaudhary's affidavit. The letter said "the affidavit clearly delineates the deliberate inaction on the part of Chief Minister Narendra Modi during the Gujarat carnage of 2002 in general and the Gulburg Society massacre in particular."
The IPS officer had filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court in 2011 alleging Modi had asked top police officials to allow Hindus to vent their anger after the Godhra train fire incident.
Bhatt has since long been demanding examination of Modi by the Nanavati Commission.
In the letter, he said Chaudhary had made serious allegations against Modi in his affidavit of July, 2002, submitted to the Commission. The affidavit says he (Chaudhary) and the then Leader of the Opposition, Naresh Rawal, had met Modi at around 2 pm on February 28, 2002.
"I apprised the Chief Minister of the grave danger to the life of (Ehsan) Jaffery and lives of occupants of Gulburg Society. I did not find any positive response from the Chief Minister," Chaudhary had said.
