BEST buses to become hi-tech soon
Mumbai’s BEST has decided to install close circuit cameras in its entire fleet of over 3,000 buses.

Mumbai: After the July 11 serial blasts, as a precautionary measure to ensure safety checks for passengers, Mumbai’s BEST bus service has decided to install close circuit cameras in its entire fleet of over 3,000 buses.

The CCTV (closed circuit camera TV) installed at various positions in BEST buses will keep an eye on all activities of passengers.

To start with, 200 buses will be fitted with CCTV's and the recorded videos will be stored for at least three months by the Mumbai Municipal authorities.

“We want to send out a message that you are being watched. Every action is being monitored by these closed circuit cameras,” General Manger, BEST Uttam Khobragade says.

Maharashtra's Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh inaugurated the service by taking a ride with other officials.

Apart from the CCTVs, BEST is also introducing smart cards, which would provide an easy way of paying for the trips.

The smart cards are prepaid cards and passengers would be able to swipe them on entry and exit.

“With a smart card, passengers' entry is registered and fears of losing a ticket has also been taken care of,” says Vilasrao Deshmukh.

Besides the hi-tech devices installed in the buses, there will also be an arrangement of Hutch drop boxes in the buses to enable passengers to pay their mobile bills while they are travelling in the bus.

BEST plans to install all these services in its entire fleet of 3,400 buses in the next one year.
