Basavanna not an escapist

“Many litterateurs have written the history of social reformer Basavanna in different ways, leading to confusions and disputes over his birth, death and other details. Basavanna lived for 62 years and did not committ suicide,” said Mathe Mahadevi. At an event organised to mark the 817th Lingaikya of Basavanna on Monday, she asserted that Basavanna was not an escapist. “Many still believe that Basavanna was an escapist, which is far from truth. As he encouraged inter-caste marriage, he was ostracised. His literary creation Vachana Sahitya has answers to all these questions,” she said.

Kannada Development Authority Chairman Mukyamantri Chandru said that Basavanna had given prominence to Kannada. “When it was difficult to understand Bhagavad Gita, Basavanna’s vachanas in simple Kannada reached common people,” he said, suggesting we should implement the principles of Basavanna.
