COIMBATORE: A Coimbatore-based AIADMK member has petitioned the Chief Minister to bring into effect a ban on plastic water bottles in all 10 corporations of the State. In his petition, K Ramasubramanian said: “Over 8,000 tonnes of garbage is being released in the 10 corporations of the State and over 40 per cent of this sewage is PET bottles. These bottles are non-biodegradable and cannot be destroyed or disposed of easily. They clog the drains and as a result water stagnates. The quality of soil at places where these bottles are buried is adversely affected. Therefore, no private organisation should be granted permission to manufacture and market bottled water.”Instead, the corporations should take the initiative and establish water-vending machines in public places in partnership with private agencies and charge a nominal sum of 10 paise per litre, which the public would be willing to pay, he added. The petition was directed from the Chief Minister’s office to that of Commissioner of Municipal Administration, Chennai, Chandrakant B Kamble. Subsequently, a letter from Kamble’s office, instructing all corporation commissioners to take appropriate action in this regard, had been sent. However, when asked about it, Kamble said that he was unaware of any such petition. Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner T K Ponnusamy said: “We did receive the notice and it is being considered. However, the move is highly impractical and cannot be implemented right away. It involves a lot of deliberation.”
