HYDERABAD: Over 1.22 lakh households in the East and West Zones of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), who have no door-to-door garbage collection facility, can heave a sigh of relief. Come March 2012, door-to-door garbage collection covering 1,22,841 households in several uncovered localities of East and West Zones will be done through auto-tippers.If it materialises as planned, it will be for the first time in the twin cities that auto-tippers by a private party will have been used for this purpose. As of now, in the East Zone, there are about 1,77,874 households and of them, 1,27,580 are covered by tricycles. Similarly, in the West Zone, of the 2,23,611 households, about 1,51,064 are covered by tricycles. The proposed auto-tippers, after collecting garbage from door-to-door, will also go around the localities to clean up open dumps.Residents of the East and West Zones can also look forward to cleaner air with the Jawaharnagar Dumping Yard getting all set to treat and dispose of solid waste from March. The exercise is part of the Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Project (IMSWM).The GHMC will hand over the responsibility of primary (door-to-door) collection, secondary collection and transportation of municipal garbage from the two zones to private developer, Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd on the condition that it completes the Leachate Treatment Plant (`6 crore), Land Fill and Compost Plant (`25 crore) at Jawaharnagar.Once these three components are completed, it would vastly improve the environment at Jawaharnagar Dumping Yard located on the city outskirts. Last week the Andhra Pradesh High Court had delivered a judgement in favour of Ramky as some GHMC unions approached the court against handing over the collection and transportation of garbage to the company fearing that it would affect several thousands of employees.
