Perhaps inspired by the incident at Sivakasi on Saturday, a 20-year-old auto driver set himself ablaze and jumped off a Metro Rail bridge at Adambakkam on Sunday creating a flutter in the area.
Police claim that the man was in an inebriated state when he climbed the 60-ft high bridge using the railings.
According to police, Deenan hailing from Nanmangalam, swiftly moved up the bridge as there were no Metro Rail workers to stop him in his attempted suicide.
He was seen carrying a can filled with kerosene with which he set himself ablaze before jumping off the bridge. Police said that Deenan was an alcoholic and had even sold the auto rickshaw given to him by his father recently, spending all the money earned through that on alcohol.
He then opted to hire another auto rickshaw on rent and plied at the Vanampet - Ariyalur auto stand. Given his drinking habit, he also moved out of his house and was staying alone.
According to police sources, Deenan had apparently told his fellow auto drivers on Sunday morning that he would be resorting to this extreme step from the Thirusulam hill.
While his friends had gone on a search in that area after the threat, he instead chose the Metro Rail bridge at Adambakkam. On falling from the bridge, Deenan suffered severe multiple injuries which also included severe burns.
He was rushed to the Kilpauk Medical College hospital where his condition is said to be critical.
In a similar incident on Saturday, an auto driver in Sivakasi jumped off the terrace of a building after setting himself ablaze protesting an eviction drive. The incident was widely reported in the media on Sunday.
