Army orders court of enquiry in sexual harassment case
Capt Neha Rawat has accused Maj Gen A K Lal of sexual harassment.

Srinagar: The Army has instituted a court of enquiry to look into allegations of sexual harassment by a woman officer Captain Neha Rawat against her superior, GOC of 3 Infantry Division in Leh, Major General A K Lal.

Capt Rawat had alleged that she had been sexually harassed during yoga classes on several occasions.

However, Maj General Lal's family in Chandigarh have dismissed the allegations and instead lay the blame on Rawat saying her personal conduct had all along been unworthy of an officer.

In a swift move the Army instituted a Court of Enquiry and has moved the General out from 14 Corp to the headquarters of 15 Corp to ensure the process is fair and objective.

The allegations of misconduct have been made by Captain Neha Rawat against Maj Gen A K Lal. The allegations are pertaining to his conduct during the meditation classes. The GOC has now been attached to 15 code. The GOC of 15 code is now heading the enquiry,” said PRO, 15 Corps, Army, Lt Col Mathur.

It’s a familiar story, one that has repeated every time a woman officer has alleged misbehaviour against a male officer.

The tragic suicide of Sushmita Chakravarty, Flying Officer Anjali Gupta levelling similar charges and the Army Vice-Chief in 2006 kicking up a controversy by saying the Army could do without women are examples of the low comfort level the force has with the women officers.
