Army officer who headed Operation Bluestar blames Punjab government, Pakistan for Gurdaspur terror attack

Lieutenant General (retired) KS Brar, who headed the Indian Army's Operation Bluestar to flush out Khalistani terrorists from the Golden Temple in 1984, blamed the Punjab government and Pakistani intelligence agency ISI for the terror attack in Gurdaspur on Monday (July 27).

The former Army officer criticised the Punjab government of taking a soft stand towards Khalistani terror groups and releasing terrorists keeping in view their vote banks. "State government wants to release the terrorists leading to such situation. The government is soft on terror groups," he said.

Accusing the ISI is trying to revive Khalistani terror groups, Lt Gen Brar said the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI wants to take the Punjab back to what was in the 1980s while the state government has been weak. "It is very disturbing to terrorists have come across the border. This is unfortunate that so many terrorists came unnoticed. It is the failure of the state government. The terrorists should have been rounded up," he added.

While ISI has been trying to link up the terrorist activity between Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab, the Lt General said he did not see any public sympathy for Khalistani terror groups in the Punjab.

He also blamed the security forces of not being able to neutralise the terrorists quickly and said that the attackers should have been taken alive but the opportunity has been now missed. According to him the entire intelligence gathering also needs to be revamped in order to preempt such attacks.
