GUNTUR: The five-member intelligence wing of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) interacted with 17 victims of clinical trials in Piduguralla on Wednesday.The team, including S Harsharan Singh and P A Rao, and Hyderabad Public Health Forum members Dr Satyanarayana and Dr Rajan, talked to each woman who underwent clinical trial for not less than 30 minutes. A woman victim said that she agreed to undergo clinical trial for the heart surgery of his son which costs Rs 2 lakh. The person who acted as a mediator between the pharmaceutical company (Maxis) and the woman, promised to pay `1.5 lakh to her if she agreed for the clinical trial. She developed complications after undergoing medical tests for the drug trial. The woman said she was only paid Rs 9,000. After the news broke out, the district administration admitted the clinical trial victim in a hospital where she underwent treatment for a week. She was discharged from hospital two days ago. Most of the victims are poor. Some of them are widows and divorcees. The NHRC team did not say anything after the interaction with clinical trial victims for eight hours. The Axis Clinical Lab Victims Committee submitted a memorandum to the NHRC team seeking free treatment to all the victims and a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the women. It also demanded that the government allot two acres of land to each victim and lend Rs 1 lakh for setting up of small business units.Committee convenor Kola Swathi urged the NHRC team to recommend free education to the children of victims and widow pensions to the eligible women.
