Jammu: The Amarnath Yatra will now begin from June 15, it is learnt, after an agreement on Monday between Baba Amarnath Niyas (BAN) and Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) to this effect.

BAN, a conglomeration of various religious and social organisations, wanted the yatra from June 15, while the state government's position was that the pilgrimage could not start before the scheduled date of June 29.

However, after day-long negotiations, chief executive officer of the Board RK Goyal, in a document reportedly said the yatra will start from June 15, though, in a symbolic manner as two members from both SASB and BAN will be flown to the cave shrine for conducting a pooja marking the beginning of the pilgrimage.

"They have agreed upon our demands, and have said that the yatra will commence from the proposed date of June 15, though in a symbolic manner," said the national spokesperson of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Surinder Kumar Jain.

Jain, though not a part of the meeting between the Board and the Niyas, also revealed, "In order to avert any such conflict in the near future, the Board has proposed the formation of a sub-committee under the chairmanship of a Board member, which along with the religious heads will fix the duration of the yatra."

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu zone Dilbagh Singh, on Monday said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has asked the police and the state administration to take every possible step to make the yatra a success.

"CM wants the yatra to be conducted in a proper and peaceful manner. He wants to attract more and more people to the state and every possible step in this direction will be taken," Singh said during a function organised by the Delhi Public School (DPS).

Stressing that the police can deal with any threat, Singh said attempts were being made to infiltrate the country's borders but they have been foiled.
