New Delhi: The Orissa High Court on Tuesday granted an interim bail till February 5 to the state's Director General of Police B B Mohanty, whose son Biti has been convicted in a rape case.
Biti was found guilty of raping his German friend and co-scholar in while on a trip to Alwar last year.
He had jumped the police parole in Jaipur jail and has been missing since then.
The Jaipur Jail authorities later granted parole to Biti from November 20 to December 4, 2006 on the grounds of his mother's illness and after the DGP furnished surety bonds. But Biti went missing since.
Fearing imminent arrest by the Rajasthan Police, Mohanty had filed an anticipatory bail in Cuttack on January 13.
A team of Rajasthan police had gone to Orissa last month to arrest Biti, but returned empty-handed after hunting for him for 20 days.
Subsequently, the Rajasthan government initiated action against the Orissa DGP after a sustained media campaign demanding an inquiry into the whole issue.
The Rajasthan government has also accused the DGP of shielding his son and helping him jump parole. Two FIRs have been filed against Biti and his father by the Rajasthan government.
Mohanty on his part has vehemently denied filing any application for his son's parole, much to Rajasthan police’s shock.
Meanwhile, Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has said that his government will give full support to the Rajasthan government in the matter.
