Melbourne: Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram expressed shock and worry over Benazir Bhutto’s assassination on Thursday evening.
The former Pakistan captain is in Australia as part of the TV commentary team for ESPN-Star Sports.
He was clearly worried as he entered the media lounge and was immediately surrounded by concerned colleagues and media persons.
"I got to know in the morning. My family is right now in Karachi and I have not yet spoken to them. I believe things are not good there," said Akram concerned over the emotional reactions of the public in the streets of various Pakistani cities.
Akram recalled how he had met the Benazirt in Dubai a few years back and said, "she recognized me and spoke to me for a few minutes. It’s a terrible setback for us."
Meanwhile he was also worried about the safety of his former captain and teammate Imran Khan who has been fighting vigorously for democracy in Pakistan.
Pervez Musharraf put Imran, leader of the Tehreek-e-Insaaf party, under house arrest when he imposed emergency.
Imran had called for an uprising against Musharraf invoking the students and the youth to build a movement. Akram expressed fears over safety and future of his erstwhile new-ball bowling partner.
Asked about the future of the forthcoming Australia’s tour to Pakistan in March-April Akram said, "it’s a situation that cricket board can do nothing about. First the country has to settle down into some state of normalcy."
