The legal fraternity on Monday thanked Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for hiking the relief fund under the Tamil Nadu Advocates Welfare Fund from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5.25 lakh.
“The lawyers’ community whole-heartedly welcomes the CM’s kind gesture,” D Selvam, chairman of the Bar Council of TN and Puducherry, said at a press meet here. A grand function to felicitate the CM would be held shortly, he added.
Jayalalithaa made the announcement while participating in the 150th year celebrations of the Madras High Court on September 8.
She had also announced that a recurring grant up to `4 crore would be given to the Welfare Fund for this purpose. The Madras High Court Advocates Association, represented by its president G Mohanakrishnan and vice-president R Murali, also expressed their “deep sense of gratitude to the CM.”
On Monday, a resolution was adopted to hold a mega function to honour the CM for her magnanimous attitude, they said.
Similarly, TN Advocates Association president S Prabakaran said, “A long-pending demand has been fulfilled by the CM.”
