COIMBATORE: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has granted permission to two private engineering colleges in the State to change their names.Quite surprisingly, the AICTE nod has come at a time when students have already enrolled in these institutions based on their old names which figured in the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA 2011) singlewindow counselling.According to AICTE officials, the Kamban Engineering College in Tiruvannamalai, administered by family members of former DMK Minister E V Velu, has been given permission to change its name to Arunai College of Engineering. Also, the Kancheepuram district based Vels Srinivasa College of Engineering and Technology has been given permission to change its name to Agni College of Technology.Apart from these two engineering colleges, AICTE has also given permission to a management (MBA) institution and two MCA institutions to change their names. This year, 49 colleges in the country have been allowed to change their names. However, TNEA authorities said they would not give effect to the change of names immediately.TNEA chairman and Anna University ViceChancellor P Mannar Jawahar told Express, "As the TNEA counselling is nearing completion the names of the colleges will not be changed during the counselling. The institutions can later approach the respective affiliating universities and the Directorate of Technical Education for it."
