CHENNAI: The DMK on Sunday achieved a surprise victory at the Chennai Corporation’s Zonal Chairman elections after its candidate, Joseph Samuel, councillor from ward 85, won in Zone 7 following alleged cross voting by AIADMK councillors. However, AIADMK won the rest of the 14 zones unopposed. While the elections for the first six zones, which began at 9.30 am, were completed swiftly as only one candidate filed nominations in each of the zones, the DMK decided to contest Zone 7 despite having only four councillors and the backing of another one from the Congress. After the polling through ballot papers was completed, Corporation Commissioner D Karthikeyan announced that of the 15 votes registered, the DMK candidate had received eight and the AIADMK seven, resulting in the post being decided by a margin of one vote. Following the victory, DMK members raised victory slogans outside the Council hall, which resulted in a verbal tussle between cadres belonging to both parties. The police then intervened and requested the crowd to disperse. The AIADMK prevailed in all the newly added zones of the Chennai Corporation. The elections to Standing Committee were also held in the afternoon.
