AIADMK MLAs stage walkout

The five-member AIADMK bloc staged a walk-out in the territorial assembly to protest the failure of the government to initiate action against those involved in the alleged irregularities in the construction of flood protection wall on the banks of River Godavari in Yanam.

Replying to AIADMK’ floor leader, A Anbazhagana’s question, Chief Minister N Rangasamy said that the tender for the construction of flood protection wall at Francethippa area in Yanam was floated since the area was severely hit by the flood in 2006. In order to prevent recurrence of such incident an estimate was prepared in 2007 and forwarded to the centre for approval, Rangasamy said. The total cost of the scheme was Rs 145.59 crore, for which the central government was providing Rs 104.75 crore and the UT government gave Rs 38.83 crore, the CM added.

Anbazhagan alleged that there was widespread corruption in the project and the signature of the Yanam REO was forged and the estimate was sent to Delhi. He demanded an inquiry by the Central Vigilance Commission. The Chief Minister replied that a CBI inquiry was going on and there was no need to go deep into it.

The AIADMK member criticised the government and the house plunged into uproar. It were expunged by the Speaker. The AIADMK members staged a walk out.
