The suggestion of Ahluwalia runs counter to the approach of the state which has been trying to prevent the transfer of paddy land for other purposes and ensure that the state achieve food self-sufficiency.Chennithala also flayed the suggestion of Ahluwalia that the state can depend on other states for foodgrains. Kerala had to face shortage of rice on several occasions in the past due to fall in rice production in other states. In a statement, Chennithala said that the state had earlier discarded similar proposal made by noted economist P S Lokanathan.
